What is a Mentor?

A Mentor is a caring adult who offers guidance, support and encouragement to a student. Just one hour a month can help a child improve academically, set goals, gain confidence and build a strong foundation for success.

Why Mentor?

Mentors are a key part of our students’ success. Your presence can help a student stay focused, inspired and on track for college and beyond. Think back—did someone believe in you? Now it’s your turn to be that person for someone else.

Where and When?

Mentoring happens at the student’s school during school hours, or virtually monitored by TSIC staff. Sessions are flexible—typically twice a month for 30 minutes—and scheduled to fit both your availability and the student’s class time.

Requirements

  • To ensure a safe environment for students, all mentors complete a screening process, including fingerprinting and Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) background checks. Mentors must be approved as a level 2 volunteer with the school district.

  • Mentors complete a short orientation and receive tools to support students in academics, college readiness and life skills. Ongoing resources like our biweekly Mentor Minute provide guidance every step of the way.

  • To foster community, mentors stay connected through biweekly newsletters and in-person Mentor Mingles held throughout the school year.
